In the old days, hyangyo functioned as educational institutions for intermediate-level education, and were established in each provincial region. Pyeongchang Hyangyo still remains relatively intact today, thereby providing a glimpse of traditional Korean architecture. Pyeongchang Hyangyo offers programs through which participants can learn traditional Korean principles.
